For the perfect you sometimes have to use additionally a form of "haben" (to have) or "sein" (to be). Yes, Like English German also has tenses such as Present tense, perfect tense, past tense and future tense. But in German, for speaking we mostly use perfect tense which is used to tell past instances as well and while writing we usually use past tense along with perfect tense.
